If you use Virtual IP addresses and want to send ICMP requests to those addresses you will need to redirect all packets arriving at the Virtual IP address to the internal server. NAT Any incoming protocol to an internal server's IP address. This is because there is no option to NAT only ICMP packets and so to get a response to an ICMP ping you must redirect everything to the inside server.

Since you would not be able to use the NAT firewall (you are sending everything for the specified IP address through) it is recommended that you use the Stateful Packet Inspecition (SPI) firewall to block any traffic you did not want.
